The natural travertine terraces have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Natural Site in 1988. The travertines were established in the 2nd century BC in the ancient city of Hierapolis, 18 kilometers north of Turkey/Denizli, by one of Pergamon’s Kings, Eumenes II. Furthermore, it is believed that Pergamon was named Hierapolis after Hiera, the wife of Pergamon’s legendary founder Telephus. With its unique geology and history, Pamukkale is a must-see for any traveler.
